2014 Corn Maze Answer Key #2
The EVEN numbered questions are answered on THIS page. The ODD numbered Questions are answered on the previous page.
"A lie can travel halfway across the planet in the time the truth is still putting on its trousers." Winston Churchill
Often the media and popular culture will latch onto a sensational story and run with it even if the facts are skewed or misrepresented. At Swore Farms, our purpose in having questions in the maze is to give you a light-hearted educational experience. We take no political stand, but do offer you the chance to challenge some of your long time misconceptions about agriculture. We encourage you to follow the links and do your own reading on any fact or answer that surprises you. Most of all, we hope you had fun!
(#2) Earwigs get their names from the way they… love ears of corn
Earwigs would much rather be crawling around in the corn, munching on aphids and greens than be stuck in some nasty human ear. The idea that they seek out human ears is a wives tale perpetuated by Hollywood. There's no need to fear the little beasties.
(#4) How much of our food and fiber do large corporate farms now produce?  6%

(#6) DDT caused the near-extinction of Bald Eagles. False

This is a perfect example of popular culture run amuck. There are songs and all sorts of things propagating this myth.

You can read a longer explanation here , but this is the short-ish version: Dr Dewitt (the man who studied egg shell thinning) withheld calcium from the birds who ingested DDT. Since ALL egg layers require calcium, the egg shells thinned. When wistle-blowers demanded he redo the tests while keeping calcium the same, there was no indication of egg shell thinning. Also, bald eagle populations had already bottomed out and were on the rebound before DDT was ever used--even in Europe. There is no correlation between DDT use and Bald Eagle populations. So why does the myth persist? Because the book, "Silent Spring" made it such a popular political card, that the actual truth was ignored.

(#8) Araucana chickens are special because they... lay blue and green eggs

(they are also known as the Easter egg chickens)
(#10) Brown eggs are more nutritious than white eggs. False

The color of the egg is determined by the breed of the hen that laid the egg. (The color of the shell she uses to coat the egg) The color of the egg (be it blue, green, blue, brown, or spotted...) does not change the nutritional value of the egg inside.

That said, the color and flavor of the yoke can be affected by what the hens eat. A free range egg will typically be far more orange than a regular hen's egg.
